There is nothing better than an unexpected “thank-you”
It was in the late 1950s, I was still taking a couple courses to finish up my engineering degree and had taken a job with a small company. For lunch the company president, most of the sales staff and the engineering department, usually about six or eight of us, went up the street to a small Italian restaurant. That was at the northeast corner of Euclid Avenue and 55th Street, just about under the railroad bridge. There was a big round table in the back room, that was our “stammtisch”, always reserved for our group. Every so often, after we finished our meal and before we got our checks, the proprietor, a cheerful Italian of substantial girth, would stop in and announce, “today’s lunch was on me”, and there would be no checks.
That story came to mind as I was ready to order lunch on my phone apps before leaving our driveway.
A notice came up that the proprietor of the local Chick-fil-A had gifted me with a free sandwich. It was a very pleasant surprise. Oh,
it has happened before, the folks at Chick-fil-A are good at keeping their customers happy.
Just a few days ago I received the invitation shown here.
A tour of the Chick-fil-A headquarters. We probably won’t take them up on this. We did that tour a few years ago. Even met Truett Cathy, the founder of the organization.
To what do I owe such largess? Well, I hold “Chick-fil-A One Status”. That means I spend way too much money there.
But hey, they do make one fine chicken sandwich! After all, just about every other fast-food chain has tried to emulate this beauty.
[Their photo, not mine. Years ago, I tried to offer my services to them, but that did not work out. Maybe I will tell that story some other day.]
