Along a Scenic Route

A day of pleasant travel and stops

There is a folder named LAB on my hard drive where I temporarily keep photos for post-processing. As happens to us older folk, occasionally photos there gets neglected. Last week I was looking around and found a subfolder with a single photo of a building with interesting dormer windows. “Ah”, I said to myself, “perfect for Monday Windows!”

On looking a bit closer, I recognized the photo and remembered the trip to historic Cumberland Gap back in the fall of 2015. We had planned to take the scenic route up to Tennessee so we could stay overnight nearby and get to the Gap early the next day.

I just had to go back to the archives and look at all the photos from that day.

Our route took us by way of Tallulah Gorge, Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the touristy area of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. A rich photo day.

As we arrived at Clingmans Dome low clouds closed in and we found ourselves in fog. Some good examples of photos with haze and fog – ready for a post on that topic.

Then the drive-by photos from the tourist towns for another article on that subject.

As soon as I get those other posts together, I will provide the links here.

Addendum 1

Turns out that day’s photos have become an even richer lode. Before I got around to finishing up the article on drive-by photography, I realized that one of the photos had extra potential. It seemed perfect as the basis of my “Holiday Art 2022” image – for greeting cards and more.

Here is the photo and the resulting cafe art piece:

You may purchase greeting cards, wall art, and a variety of gift items with the “Holiday Art 2022” and “Happy Holidays 2022” art here:

Addendum 2

The article “Drive-By Photography“, based on this trip, was released on December 4, 2022.

And as they say on late night TV, “but wait, there’s more”. A story on composition also seems to be in the making. Keep watching this place!

Addendum 3

One of the photos from that day, the elk, finally has its moment in the sun. The original photo was bland at best. Poor light, the elk was too far away. The meadow had lost its fresh green colors and its wildflowers months ago. No leading lines pointing to the elk. What it did have was plenty of “environmental space” to allow many cropping illustrations. And so it resulted in the Composition Rules post.

Addendum 4

Oh, of course. That original thought did lead to a series of posts at Monday Window. Follow the link to the first of them.
