Lament

… why, oh why?

It is really, really frustrating. This website used to be hosted by a small internet service provider. As I was planning to add features, I started to feel bad. WordPress was changing and the new approach put more and more computing chores unto the severs. In days past the html code created by the webmasters was downloaded to the browsers and the text and images were displayed there are instructed by the code.

Now, however, WordPress sites consist of “blocks” – special code that must be interpreted by the servers who then generate the html code that is supplied to the browser. Sure, it happens fast. Modern computers are very fast and powerful. But collectively they have to work much harder than in the past.

So, I decided to move Cafe Ludwig, and many of my other sites, to a much larger hosting provider, one with much more powerful resources, a service with stellar credentials.

What did I get? A website that takes at least twice as long to load as before. Never before did Cafe Ludwig take half a minute to load the same material that at the prior provider took four or five seconds.

Not only that, but the migration was also plagued by problems, most of which have not yet been fully fixed.

I stripped the most time-consuming items from the front page to try and get better loading performance. But at what price? Will visitors bother to come to a fully static page? Will they bother to click the link to see what is happening at Cafe Ludwig and the other sites?

Ah, let’s go sit down with a cup of coffee …
