Marinara Sauce
For a no-salt marinara sauce I use canned no salt added tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. Here are my ingredients:
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- One onion, diced fairly small
- Celery, about two stalks, diced small. I prefer the inside part.
- One can no salt added tomato paste (15 oz)
- One can no salt added diced tomatoes (14.5 oz)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp oregano
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp Italian Seasoning
Sauté the onion in olive oil for about 10 minutes. Add the celery and continue cooking another 2 to 3 minutes. Add the other ingreadients. Bring to a boil and then turn down heat to a simmer. Let simmer about an hour.
Theat makes about six servings of sauce.
Pasta
Any pasta is good. We like penne, shells, or fettuccini. Cook as directed on package.
Protein
We like Impossible Italian Meatballs. Although these are not low on salt, two meatballs is about 300 mg sodium. I like to heat them up in the marinara sause foor at least 15 minutes.
In the photo we used rotini pasta – and, of course, a sprinkling of grated parmesan cheese ( adds another 50 mg of sodium).
