By bus through Atlanta
Last week over on Monday Window we started on a bus ride, actually it happened long ago back in 2013. We will continue that ride here and in the next couple of weeks to come. Cafe Ludwig will be my site for windows posts in the future.
Photography through bus windows brings its own set of challenges. Let’s take a look.
- The window might be dirty or scratched. Bringing some cleaning tissues is a good idea but it can only help on the inside.
- Reflections are difficult to avoid. Getting close to the window helps. A soft, cushiony, black lens shade might be a solution, but I have yet to find something suitable for my lenses.
- As the bus rolls along close object, such as signs and utility poles, come up fast and whiz by in a blur. Shooting between such obstacles isn’t easy.
- At about 20 mph (about 30 km/h) the bus, and you and your camera, move about 3.5 inches (90 mm) in a hundredth of a second. Objects in the foreground will easily be blurred. A high shutter speed can help.
Here we see some distant buildings, and their windows, with interfering items, the sign at the left and light pole on the right, neatly framing the scene. I shot at 1/1000 second to avoid blur.
Here we have more windows along this street scene. Avoiding the poles was less successful, but at least you can tell the exact location.
Both the photo above and the one below are marred by reflections, but there are plenty of windows to see.
