- Vase of Flowers
Painting by Odilon Redon

Odilon Redon – Vase of Flowers – c. 1905 -CMA This work is in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is described thus:
Rapturous flower still lifes like this dominated the last decade and a half of Odilon Redon’s career and provided his greatest commercial success. His interest in plants and flowers began in his youth; child of wine producers, he grew up northwest of Bordeaux and was sensitive to fluctuations in weather, light, and temperature affecting the grape harvest. When he was 20, Redon met Armond Clavaud, a botanist and draftsman who illustrated his own compendium of flowers of the Bordeaux region. Clavaud’s meticulously rendered drawings sparked the young Redon’s imagination and helped to instill his desire to paint “nature, as seen in a dream.”
The image here is from a once planned talk on still life photography.
- Pencils
Soft Drawing Pencils
Got a set of soft pencils – HB to 8B.

Haven’t used 8B before. It makes a wonderful drawing tool. Here is a quick sketch using only the 8B.

- In Ice
The ice storm enveloped everything in a coat of ice.

All will be gone in another day.

- Yearing
Yearning, nostalgia, or the love of minimalism?
When I saw the Lens-Artists Challenge with the topic “minimalism” I immediately thought of my photo that I used to wish everyone a happy new year. It shows a contrail in a cloudy sky.
Contrails have been a favorite photo subject of mine for many years. They always evoke a feeling that is hard for me to describe.
Maybe it is the minimalist image that they paint into the sky. Maybe a contrail brings up long-ago memories. Maybe it is a yearning to travel to far-off places.
The dictionary defines “yearning” as “a feeling of intense longing for something, typically something that one been separated from or that is unattainable“.
My Delta account says that I have over 150 thousand miles, but I have not been on an aircraft for many years. Now travel is out of reach for me. Maybe that has something to do with it.
I did not include any of my contrail images in my challenge post Minimalism. So, here are three of them, including my contrail photo from last December, here in black-and-white.

Hi Ludwig, I took your advice and saved this blog site to my sidebar. The shrimp and grits looked good even though I have never sampled this dish myself. Thanks for posting the photo of yourself, as it was nice to see you again.
Thank you, Beatrice
There are many nooks and crannies at Cafe Ludwig – thank you for looking around. Just yesterday OneDrive showed me an old photo from our little get-together at 45 South cafe – it was nice to see you again too.
